In Prey by Michael Crichton also speaks of the ills of nanotech. Haven't found a sci fi book that's been much in favour of it but my accomplished reading list has been quite short.

One cool thing about buckyballs (C60 molecules) is the possibility of a tether for a Space Elevator - something with enough tensile strength but lightweight enough(http://www.thespacereview.com/article/47/1). Perhaps up, up and away if things go awry.
