elearnspace on Scholarly Publishing
I got this one from Dave Cormier, who is one of the people working on the VRE system at UPEI. George Siemens writes a good summary of the scholarly publishing process and makes some great suggestions regarding ways to reform and grow the process. I also like that he paints a picture using the OJS system as the model: OJS is an open source journal management system that provides workflow management and archiving for academic publishing. As an open source framework it also provides a great foundation for building the next generation scholarly publishing system, which is hopefully what will happen in the context of the new CFI-funded Synergies project. I am speaking with a number of faculty at UPEI who are interested in changing the way the scholarly publishing process works, as well as a couple who like the current one but want to move to an open access context. The nice thing about something like OJS and the new models that are emerging is that they will allow both - a necessary precursor to effecting the punctuated equilibrium-ish change we need in scholarly publishing.
