An Open Source Ballet In Progress
What a weekend. I have had the privilege of watching what can only be described as an open source ballet/barn raising/musical jam session all in one. I'm too old now to be in the thick of such an event ;-) but I am enjoying the show from the margins. As you will have gathered from earlier threads on this topic a group of talented open source'rs have come together to move UPEI's Library from Sirsi Unicorn to Evergreen Heaven in a very short time. It is one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had: watching a small group of kick-ass developers and library folk do what they do best. Here are some excerpts from the last few days of e-mail messages - and there have been many. Much of the conversation has been between Grant Johnson, Paul Pound, Charles Tassell (UPEI), Dan Scott (Laurentian), Mike Rylander, Bill Erickson, Jason Etheridge (Equinox).

Correct, but a restart_perl wouldn't hurt.
Yes! I figured that out last week!
Sorry for not getting to this on Saturday, but I didn't get to my E-Mail until after midnight...
You guys know a lot more than I do regarding this stuff so let me know what is the best way to proceed?
In my wanderings, I almost never touch those processes.
Okay. The production bibs and holdings have been loaded onto islandpines and have been visible since 10:00 am EST. The catalogue looks splendiferous now that Mike Rylander has loaded the authority records so that relevant subjects get all hierarchical.

You may notice some funky log entries coming from Postgres as I get the remote archiving going. Don't worry, though. The log messages are meant to look scary to get your attention, but they're mainly harmless.
I haven't tested it yet, as it looks like Mike has something running at the moment, but it should work fine.
oops
You know, I think this might actually work!
I believe I've found the problem...In short, if you need permission to edit/create a sub-group, you must have permission to edit/create from the parent group (all the way up the tree).
Bib records are now being loaded into the database and should be complete by 8:00 am EST. Holdings will follow shortly thereafter.
That man has one heck of a brain.
She can't see the groups to create new patrons. What am I missing?
Monday AM EG meeting will be about users, Groups and Permissions. Who is in what group and what that group can do. Let's think about simplifying.
Thanks, Paul. Between this and the policy info that Grant is getting as a policy file for Dan, I think we're covered.
I actually checked in an updated version of export_unicorn.pl to the Subversion repository last night, so it's ready to roll now. When you run it, it will create an export2eg subdirectory filled with files; copy the whole directory over to i-p and we'll have bibs, holdings, transactions, authority records, user notes...
Dan and I just chatted for a few minutes about item and transaction import, and we've realized that there are a couple critical pieces of information missing in order to correctly bring the circs in...
And then let's grab another snapshot before patrons go in?
Paul is probably ready to replace the JS files for our circ rules and modifiers? Is that the way to go?
Friday May 30
Here's what I see in my over stimulated mind...Any other critical tasks that I missed that someone wants to volunteer for?
...as per our phone conversation earlier this week I am confirming that the Robertson Library at UPEI will not be renewing our maintenance contract...
#2 would be the simplest to get going right now, and would require no code changes in the OPAC -- assuming no overlap, as Jason points out.
Loomware.pbwiki.com/UPEI_Unicorn_Evergreen_Migration was just edited
You can feel free to make whatever changes you like to the copy of the XML.
...the best way to make these kinds of changes is in a non-default skin so that upgrades or reinstalls won't blow away your changes.
A Few Days Ago
You know something, we are going pull this off. Man, that will be slick.
hmmmmm
Staff meet with Grant every morning @ 9:00 and discuss their accomplishments of the previous day, as well as the plans for the next day or so.
If this is an unacceptable limitation, there is an alternative - but it will generate a more difficult format to work with.
I'd like to schedule an Admin Training before the end of the week? ASAP actually!
Enough for now on the OS Ballet! Oh yea - Bill, you owe me 10 bucks ;-)
